The Bay Area Climate Adaptation Network (BayCAN) is a collaborative network of local government staff and partnering organizations working to help the Bay Area region to respond effectively and equitably to the impacts of climate change.
Developed by local government, for local government and the communities they serve, BayCAN focuses on adaptation challenges in water supply, sea level rise, wastewater and stormwater management, fire risk, ecosystem and parks, and public health – and any other issues members identify. It has reached out to current initiatives in these sectors to ensure complementarity and give existing knowledge the widest distribution.
In addition to sectoral initiatives, BayCAN meets at both a regional and subregional level, maintains a website for resource sharing, convenes a bimonthly Equity Working Group, produces a newsletter, features regular webinars on topics of interest, and offers network consultations from BayCAN staff to assist with problem-solving. Links to state policy making
BayCAN is a member of the statewide network of adaptation planners, the Alliance of Regional Collaboratives for Climate Adaptation (ARCCA), offering opportunities to benchmark approaches with decision makers working at the ground level in San Diego, Los Angeles, Inland Empire, the Sacramento region, central coast, north coast, and the Sierra. ARCCA chapters actively coordinate local response to state legislative and policy initiatives through a liaison relationship with the Governor’s Office of Research and Planning, a role that will grow in value as state initiatives related to climate adaptation advance.
BayCAN is a membership organization, achieving network sustainability through a sliding scale of annual membership dues developed to make joining affordable. Only BayCAN members can participate in all network activities. For our sliding dues scales, see our Become a Member page.
